The Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) proudly welcomed its newest cohort of students with an engaging and dynamic induction program. The event, designed to introduce students to the world of hospitality and tourism, set the tone for the academic year ahead, while encouraging students to embrace their journey with open minds and enthusiasm.
The induction began with a general orientation session, where students were given an overview of GTHI’s rich legacy in shaping hospitality professionals. The Director of GTHI, in his welcoming remarks, emphasized the institute’s commitment to fostering excellence, innovation, and a strong sense of community. He urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities provided, highlighting the importance of hands-on experience and the vital role they will play in The Gambia’s growing tourism industry.
Following the general orientation, students participated in an interdepartmental orientation. This segment was crucial in helping them navigate their respective programs and departments. Faculty members from Culinary Arts, Room Division, and Restaurant and Bar engaged with the students, offering insights into their specific fields of study. The students were also introduced to the facilities, including the kitchens, training restaurants, and computer labs that they will use throughout their course.
To deepen their understanding of the industry, the induction program included visits to some of The Gambia’s most prestigious hotels. Students toured five prominent establishments: Ocean Bay Hotel, Prime Atlantic Beach Hotel, Sunset Beach Hotel, Kombo Beach Hotel, and African Princess Hotel. At each location, they observed the inner workings of the hotels, from front desk operations to housekeeping and food and beverage management. These experiences gave the students a firsthand look at what it takes to operate a successful hotel and allowed them to network with professionals who were eager to share their knowledge and experience.
The hotel visits served as an invaluable opportunity for students to connect what they learned in the classroom to real-world applications. It also fostered excitement about their future careers, as they gained insight into the diverse opportunities awaiting them in the tourism and hospitality sector.
As the induction program concluded, the new students of GTHI were filled with a sense of belonging and anticipation for the year ahead. With the support of their mentors and the immersive experiences awaiting them, they are well on their way to becoming the next generation of leaders in The Gambia’s tourism and hospitality industry.
GTHI continues to shine as a beacon of excellence, welcoming aspiring professionals with open arms and preparing them for bright futures in the world of hospitality.
