GHIT Hosts Strategic Breakfast Meeting with Key Tourism Stakeholders

On 2nd October, 2024, the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI) organized a pivotal breakfast meeting, bringing together influential players in the tourism sector to discuss and align on crucial industry matters. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), the Gambia Hotel Association (GHA), and Human Resource Managers from various hotels, marking a significant step in fostering collaboration between the institute and the industry.

The primary objective of the gathering was to develop a comprehensive communication strategy to ensure GTHI and industry partners are on the same wavelength, especially regarding internship opportunities, academic training, and professional development for industry staff.

In his opening remarks, GTHI’s Director General Mr Momodou Singhateh emphasized the importance of industry involvement in the academic and practical training of students at GTHI. He underscored that for GTHI to continue producing highly skilled graduates who meet the demands of the industry, there must be a symbiotic relationship between the institution and its industry stakeholders.

Key Discussion Points:

1. Communication Strategy: Participants discussed the need for a structured communication flow between GTHI and the hotels to ensure both sides are aligned on expectations, internship coordination, and potential employment for graduates. Suggestions included the development of a digital communication platform and regular review meetings.

2. Internship Opportunities: The meeting delved into the challenges affecting effective internship placements. Hoteliers highlighted the need for better coordination, while GTHI proposed a more flexible, yet structured approach that would benefit both the students and the industry.

3. Industry Involvement in Training: Industry representatives emphasized the need for closer collaboration with GTHI in academic training, ensuring that the curriculum reflects current trends and challenges in tourism. This would allow students to be better prepared for the realities of the workforce.

4. Professional Development: An important aspect of the discussions was the upscaling and continuous professional development of existing industry staff. It was agreed that GTHI, in collaboration with industry partners, would explore opportunities to provide short courses, workshops, and certifications aimed at enhancing the skills of hospitality professionals.

The meeting concluded with a series of actionable recommendations, including the establishment of a joint working group to oversee the implementation of these ideas. Both GTHI and the industry representatives expressed optimism that these steps would lead to improved internship experiences for students, greater industry involvement in the academic process, and a pathway for ongoing professional development for current employees.

This initiative reinforces GTHI’s commitment to maintaining strong industry ties and ensuring that its graduates are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to The Gambia’s vibrant tourism sector.
